The recovery started in 2016 for the industry of recycling is confirmed in 2017. Last year, the 1,100-sector companies grouped in the association of professional Federec have collected nearly $ 105 million tonnes of waste (wood, glass, metals, plastics, etc), or 2% more than in 2016, according to the annual report of Federec.

Almost all categories of waste are concerned by this increase, in particular scrap and non-ferrous metals, textiles and wood, while that of plastics (- 0,2 %) was penalised by the restrictions on imports imposed by China.

Many uncertainties to 2018

This dynamic has led to an increase of the turnover of the sector, which exceeded 9 billion euros, compared with 8.6 billion in 2016. The challenges for 2018 are however many, said Jean-Philippe Carpentier, president of the federation, in the introduction to this balance sheet. It refers to the taxes on the steel put in place by the United States and the extension by China of its policy of restrictions on the import of waste.

At the national level, the government is preparing a law on the circular economy, in order to improve the recycling of waste. It also provides an increase in the tax to make landfill more expensive, and wants to strengthen the rules of the eco-organisms that drive the management of certain waste, by imposing performance obligations and sanctions in case of failure.
